Since CEW consultants are not copy-editors and our work with writers is interactive, we encourage you to use a combination of CEW consulting services and the Graduate Student Association's free copy editing services.

The GSA can be used for straightforward copy-editing work that can be done outside of your presence. Working with a CEW consultant is best for planning revisions and making editorial changes that need to be discussed to make sure your meaning is preserved. The CEW may also help you with stylistic revisions to make your work easier and more pleasing for your audience to read. If you need both levels of work, it is a great idea to use both GSA and CEW services. For example, you could get copy-editing out of the way before you meet with a CEW consultant. Or you can work with a CEW consultant first on revisions related to meaning and then send your draft out for copy-editing.

CEW consultants can also help you to respond to revision suggestions made by the GSA copy-editor. You can submit up to 50 pages at a time to the GSA.. For full dissertations, students should plan to submit chapters individually and several months in advance of the deadline. Turnaround time for documents submitted to the GSA is roughly two weeks. The GSA also has a Live Chat feature in which you can speak to an editor for a quick copy-edit of a short document words or less , or questions related to grammar and formatting. We may, but we may not. Because of their experience with writing instruction and focus on language, many of our consultants are from English. We are always looking to diversify our consultant pool, but it is impossible to represent every discipline. You should not expect that your consultant be an expert in your content area. Our consultants are, however, very good at helping you gain perspective on the writing process, evaluating and discussing the rhetorical elements of texts, providing thoughtful and sensitive readings of your work, as well as helping with stylistic and grammatical elements of texts.

While we can look at an electronic version with you on your laptop, many consultants prefer working with a hard copy that can be easily viewed and that you can mark up during the session. So, if you can, bring a hard copy along with any specific questions or areas of concern. You will direct the agenda of the session. Our sessions are generally around 45 minutes long, so there is only so much that can be covered in that time. If your paper is very long, decide which portion or portions you want to focus upon. You can schedule follow-up appointments as needed.

The CEW is a great place for international students because working one-to-one with a native speaker who understands the process of language acquisition is perhaps the most efficient way to grow as a writer. We also have multilingual, international writing consultants who understand your experience and the language learning journey. Improving proficiency in written English is a long process, so many international students choose to schedule regular, ongoing appointments. As an added benefit, working one-to-one with a native speaking peer gives you excellent conversational practice as well! The CEW is not an editing service. The GSA has an editing service that is paid through your student fees.

If that service does not meet you needs, you may want to consider hiring an editor for the final stages of your wriitng process. The CEW provides collaborative, one-to-one attention to your writing, for example when editorial changes might affect meaning that requires discussion. Sometimes a combination of consultations and a traditional editing service might be a good solution. Scholarships want people to write a career goals essay to make sure participants have a clear plan in mind for their career related plans. This is to help show a scholarship committee why you are seeking funds for the next step on the path towards your success. Scholarships can make college a much lighter burden — or even a reality — for many students, but there is a limited number to go around. Because of this, scholarship competitions can be intense. When you re writing your essay, make sure to write about the goals that are relevant to the scholarship.

The essay functions to explain why you want to achieve your professional goals and how you intend to get there. In almost every application process, a portion asks the candidate to answer an essay question. When applying to an educational program, like an MBA, the essay prompt usually relates to your career goals. Many people are deserving of having a portion of their tuition covered , but the few that are chosen are those who articulate why they are a worthwhile investment to spend a scholarship fund on. When selecting which individuals are worthy of receiving financial assistance to further their education , the admissions board wants participants who have a clear plan in mind for the trajectory of their related careers. Unlike with an undergraduate application that usually asks for educational intentions, people applying to an MBA program or similar already have a lot of that experience behind them.

They are well on their way to their career, and the admissions essay is more specified. This goes for scholarship essays for these kinds of programs as well. Below are some examples of career goals essay prompts that a scholarship program could pose to its applicants:. Discuss your career goals. Many scholarships prefer the most direct approach when giving an essay prompt to their applicants. This type of question gives the candidate a lot of wiggle-room to discuss their passions, motivations, and career goals. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? This question is often used as a prompt for a career goals essay because it gives the applicant a timeline to describe their aspirations.

It forces them to be realistic in where their career will be and how they will accomplish this within the next ten years. How will this scholarship contribute to your professional success? What is your dream job? What matters most to you and why? When I was six years old, I was riding bikes with my older sister around our neighborhood. She had just taught me how to ride, and I was excited to have to freedom to explore with her. When she was rounding a particularly difficult bend to see around, a car happened to be coming along at the same time. It struck her. That bike ride changed our lives forever. Watching her physical therapist patiently assist my sister back to becoming herself awoken something in me. A passion for helping others in the same way eventually turned into a career goal of becoming a physical therapist myself.

After graduating in , I knew that the next step for me was to attend a graduate program for physical therapy. I was accepted to Lassell University Master of Science in Rehabilitation Services. This scholarship would help me afford the wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Lassell University class of , allowing me to continue working towards my ultimate career goal of becoming a physical therapist and helping others to become themselves again. In ten years, I will have been successfully running my own construction business for about five years.

I decided to get my MBA because I knew it would be a positive asset toward my long-term career goal of owning a construction business. In my high school years, I worked as a construction apprentice for a local business. I loved a lot of aspects of the business, such as building something from nothing. This led me to pursue business. In ten years and with the help of this scholarship, I will have graduated with my MBA almost a decade prior. After graduation, I plan to take a business administration internship with a carpentry business to help myself get a footing in the field. After about two years of this, I will have started my own construction business. The people I surround myself with matter most to me. Whether it be my relatives, friends, or professional acquaintances, I always care the most about the happiness of the people around me.

Making the people around me happy matters the most to me because I truly because we find our happiness through others. I believe that this drive to make a positive impression on the people around me is what drove me towards a career as a nurse. I always thought of hospitals as places where people need someone to support them and make their day a little happier. I wanted to be one of those who spend their careers positively impacting people in need. This scholarship will enable me to finally afford nursing school and go after my dream job full force. Write about goals relevant to the scholarship. For broader scholarship packages, stick to goals and accomplishments that are relevant to your educational major.

Be honest. Scholarship personnel is looking for genuine answers in career goals scholarship essays. Being honest about your prior experience and future goals in a personal statement essay betters your chances of being awarded a scholarship. Use your own, unique voice. The essay portion of a scholarship application is your chance to stand out by using your voice. Nobody else, regardless of their academic or professional achievements, is you. Make this clear in your career goals scholarship essay by keeping your unique written voice engrained in the words you produce. Be specific. A big reason that scholarship committees ask applicants to write a career goals essay is to determine how prepared they are in planning their long-term professional goals.

To better the possibility of being viewed as one of these well-planned applicants, be specific in describing your career goals. Make it clear that you know what you have to do to achieve your goals and plan to do so. Explain long and short-term goals. Even if the essay prompt asks you to describe where you see yourself in ten years, you still need to tell them the steps leading towards this picture of success. Include the short-term goals that add up to your larger career objectives in your essay response. Explain how accomplishing the smaller goals puts you at an advantage when tackling long-term ones. Including both long and short-term professional goals make your essay more comprehensive.

Explain how the program and scholarship will help you. Before writing your career goals essay, consider how this program and scholarship will help you in your career. The answer to this question is essential. The goal of providing students with a scholarship is to help them through the finances of an education. Your essay should be clear in how it will do this for you. Follow the essay formatting guidelines. Check, double-check , and triple-check the essay guidelines for content, word count, and formatting requirements. If you miss any of these steps, your essay may be immediately disqualified no matter how good it or the rest of your application is. Many times career goals essays are written by students who have already completed at least some college or are applying to a post-graduate program and need more money to continue.

How do you write a career goal for a scholarship essay? You write a career goal for a scholarship essay by sharing your passion, explaining both your long- and short-term goals, and relating your goals to the scholarship. How do you describe your career goals in an essay? You can usually work these factors into any prompt you receive, so think through them before you start writing so that you can use them as an outline of sorts. What are career goals examples? Working as a grant writer for a nonprofit organization. Becoming a department manager and eventually an executive in your field.

Caring for underserved communities as a nurse practitioner. Some goals for success include growing in your role, building your network, and finding joy in the job. The Hovnanian Scholarship is a scholarship established by the Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Foundation to provide educational support to students of Armenian descent. If you do not fit this profile, then you should not apply for the scholarship. If you have two parents of Armenian descent, then this essay should focus on both of them. An essay like this is very open. Instead, you should try to identify particular stories about your parents that are compelling and to you, exemplify the facts about their background that have most shaped you.

The key to an essay about your family—or anyone besides you—is to make sure you still show the reader a lot about you. This is because you are the college applicant. Can I talk about my great-great grandparents? My aunts and uncles? In short, the answer is yes. However, make sure that every story or example you give can be traced through your parents back to you. Every essay needs a thesis—even if it is not something you explicitly state in the final draft, you should think of this thesis as the guiding principle for your writing, and as the thing that you want your reader to understand when they finish the essay. In this essay, your thesis should be something that relates to three things: who you are, who your parents are, and your Armenian heritage. This could leave you staring at a blank document for a long time!

Luckily, a quick brainstorming session can address this problem. Grab your thesis, and ask yourself:. Each anecdote should support a different part of your thesis—avoid repetitive stories. They have passed these values on to me. As you write, keep the purpose of this essay in mind. However, details that are not obviously related to your Armenian heritage can be OK—as long you need those details to set the scene and build toward your thesis. How to Answer the Villanova Essay Questions Choose one of the following: minimum 1 page double-spaced. In asking this question, Villanova is, essentially trying to assess three things: What you understand diversity, equity and inclusion to be. If you value these things. How you put these values into action. Here are a few examples: Are you someone who has actively promoted these things by advocating for disadvantaged people? If so, great! Note that this sort of thesis touches on all three points of the prompt diversity, equity and inclusion , and clearly creates a link between past actions and future actions.

Are you someone who does not have much experience with diversity, perhaps because you come from a small, economically, racially and religiously heterogenous town? If so, you could lean into this background. Are you someone from an underrepresented minority group who has faced discrimination and struggled to gain equal access to the resources that many students take for granted? If so, you have direct experiences with what happens when a community does not value diversity, equity and inclusion. This experience has equipped me to promote these values by telling my story and by encouraging others to tell theirs.

Here are a few combinations of examples and future plans that could work well: A writer focusing on her experience working at a local homeless shelter: The writer could open the essay with a vivid recollection of the first time she realized homelessness was such an issue in her city—a recognition which mobilized her to begin volunteering at a local shelter. The writer could then focus on this understanding of both the common struggles all humans face and how social inequities exacerbate these struggles for certain people.

The writer could explain that, with this understanding, she plans to get involved in initiatives at Villanova combat homelessness, support low-income students, and advocate for more equitable healthcare. A writer focusing on her own background as an underrepresented minority: The writer could begin with vivid examples of moments of racism or other forms of discrimination that she experienced at a young age. Then, the writer could shift to an anecdote that demonstrates how he learned to cope with—and fight—discrimination. The writer could shift to explain various ways that he plans to share these strategies with his peers at Villanova—both to help other minorities and to raise awareness in the broader student body.

Using generic phrasing and clichés will make it seem like you have not reflected very deeply on these values. Whenever possible, show instead of telling. In an essay like this, it can be very tempting to make broad statements about the value of diversity, inclusion, or equity. It can also be tempting to just state your beliefs or thoughts on these matters. Instead, strive to use specific, vivid anecdotes to demonstrate that you are committed to these values. Make sure that you disambiguate—and reflect on the relationships between—these values. But be sure that you take the time to really choose your words carefully.

If you offer an example that shows the value of differences between people, then focus on diversity in your exposition of that example. If you offer an example of a time when you welcomed a stranger into a group, then that example is probably about inclusion. Then, when possible, try to relate these values. Does achieving diversity require inclusion? In order to be equitable, must a community be diverse and inclusive? General Strategy Some of the most difficult decisions that people—in college and beyond—must make often are so hard because they involve a conflict between heart and mind—between emotions and thoughts.

Demonstrate a resolution. There are some further important notes concerning the relationship between these four points you need to keep in mind: Crucially 1 and 2 must be clearly in conflict. For example, it might not make sense to say that your heart wanted to take an advanced math course, while your mind wanted to take a drama course—since typically more logic-based subjects appeal to the mind, while more art based subjects appeal to the heart. Facing a deep internal conflict humbled me and taught me to open up to others when I struggle to resolve an issue on my own. Choosing a central example An academic experience could be the center point of your response: A writer could focus on a time when he had to choose between continuing band class a cherished activity he had been involved in since elementary school and taking an additional AP course.

The writer could, ultimately, explain that he resolved this issue by choosing band, because he realized that his mind was, in fact, employing faulty reasoning: he does not need the prestige of just one more AP course, but instead it is rational to continue an activity that helps him relax and brings him joy. In an essay like this, the author could convey a thesis about rigorously using rationality—not only to reach a conclusion but also to interrogate his own biases and understand the value of his own emotions. Personal experiences can make strong central anecdotes.

Choosing an example: a few notes of caution Though many of the most difficult heart-mind conflicts can arise from romantic relationships, you should avoid this topic for a college admissions essay. General Strategy Much like the second option, this option asks you to share a particular situation. So, what kinds of examples could work? A writer could describe her struggle to learn to improvise jazz piano. The writer could explain that she thought she had to develop her own style on her own musical journey, and so resisted reaching out for tips and specific advice. However, the writer could describe a turning point—perhaps a moment when she was really inspired by another musician—where she recognized that she could learn from others and still preserve her individuality as an artist.

An essay on a topic like this could, potentially, convey a powerful thesis about how the writer realized how relying on others can allow an individual to find their individuality—rather than weakening it. An applicant could write an essay on a time when he asked his father—who had always been quite strict and distant—for advice on handling a conflict with a friend. The writer might explain that he asked his father for advice not because he wanted to, but because he had no one else to turn to. Then, the writer could show how opening up to his father paved the way for him to deepen his relationship with his dad. The writer could explain how, after months of loneliness, she decided to leave an advertisement for a book club in a local library.

Though this might have seemed like an activity, it was actually a cry for help—for friends. how she is determined to reach out and ask for help, because she knows that if she speaks up, she might benefit not only herself but also others—and even a whole community. Developing a Thesis The examples above already include theses, so by this point, you might have some sense of what kind of thesis would work for this essay! There are three main types of theses that you might have though of course, your thesis might fall somewhere in between : You learned something about yourself. You learned something interpersonal about relating to others, about your community, etc.

You learned something about the world. For example: A writer might have a thesis about how he discovered the power of humility when he asked for help after trying to do a difficult task alone. This thesis is a sort of hybrid of 1 and 3 since humility is a personal trait, but it can also be seen as a universal value. For example, this would be a suboptimal thesis: Consider an applicant who wrote an essay on asking for help from all her friends and acquaintances when she broke her leg. This applicant could try to convey a thesis about how this experience showed her that human beings are fundamentally kind and moral. This sort of thesis is very broad, and almost certainly could not be properly defended in an essay of a few pages and certainly, defending this thesis would be hard to do in a personally insightful way.

Furthermore, this basically a superficial resolution to what is a very long-standing debate in philosophy and theology. in an essay like this. You will likely not make a very compelling argument, and you will likely come off as a little arrogant: scholars have devoted their lives to these questions—only someone lacking humility would presume to answer one of them in a college essay! For example, the above thesis could be reworked if the writer were to reflect more on her own worldview and how it shifted: The same writer in the above example could instead focus on a change over time in her own perspective.

Here are the main components that you need to include in your essay and a few tips on how to execute these elements : Any basic context that the reader will need to understand the story. Note that not all essays will need to elaborate on all these points! In general, context should be kept to a bare minimum. The actual moment when you asked for help. This can be narrated in a number of ways—with actual dialogue, with vivid memories, with a dive into your feelings as you asked for help. The key is to not just assert that you asked for help, but rather to provide personal insight by showing the reader your thoughts and feelings as you did so.

It is crucial to consider such provisions following their viability in this context. Additionally, those who argue against animal testing claim that such animals lack the capacity to express themselves hence can hardly show their pain, dissatisfaction, and suffering.

This is a critical claim; however, it is not enough to support the ban against animal testing. Conversely, scientists, medics, and biologists who use such animals apply moral aspects to their undertakings; hence, will barely intend to harm such experimental animals. Since such ethical observations are carried out within the mentioned experimental testing, it is considerable to continue with the animal testing phenomenon. The Odyssey Epic of Gilgamesh. The Odyssey of Homer and the Epic of Gilgamesh are two popular legendary works with heroic characters.

Photo by Osama Shukir Muhammed Amin on Wikimedia Commons. The oldest surviving literary work is The Epic of Gilgamesh. It was composed nearly 4, years ago in ancient Mesopotamia roughly equivalent to where Iraq and eastern Syria are now. No one knows who wrote it, or why, or what readership or audience it was intended for. It is preserved on clay tablets in the earliest known alphabet, which is called cuneiform script because the scribes who wrote it formed the letters by making wedge-shaped cuneiform dents in wet clay with bits of reed. For centuries the secret of how to read cuneiform script was lost. Then, in the s, a self-taught, working-class Londoner called George Smith, studying clay tablets in the British Museum, cracked the code and brought The Epic of Gilgamesh to light.

The epic tells the story of a king, Gilgamesh, whose mother is a goddess. He rules the city of Uruk now Warka in southern Iraq. He is a great warrior and builds a magnificent city using glazed bricks, a new technique. But he is lustful and tyrannical, seizing and violating brides on their wedding day. So the gods create a wild man called Enkidu to stop Gilgamesh oppressing his people. Enkidu is made from the clay the mother goddess washes from her hands, and he is an animal rather than a human. He is covered in hair and lives with the gazelles, eating grass as they do.

However, a votaress of the temple in Uruk seduces him and after seven days and nights of fervent love-making he becomes human. She teaches him to wear clothes and eat human food. Gilgamesh falls in love with Enkidu, caressing him like a woman. But when Enkidu tries to stop him violating brides, they fight. They turn out to be equally matched, so they kiss and make friends and embark on heroic adventures. Together they go on a quest to the Cedar Forest and kill the monster Humbaba who lives there. This angers the gods, since Humbaba was their monster. While Gilgamesh is washing after the fight the goddess Ishtar sees him, falls in love, and proposes marriage. But she is the goddess of sex and violence and all her lovers come to a bad end, so Gilgamesh rejects her.

She is angry, and calls on her father, the sky god, to send another monster, the Bull of Heaven, to kill Gilgamesh. Instead Gilgamesh and Enkidu kill the Bull, which angers the gods still more, and they sentence Enkidu to death. Gilgamesh mourns him bitterly and sets off to discover the secret of eternal life. Gilgamesh dives into the ocean to find a plant that is said to make whoever possesses it young again. Though he finds it, and brings it to the surface, it is stolen by a snake, and Utnapishtim tells him that no one can defeat death.

So Gilgamesh returns to Uruk, having learned that, though he is mighty and famous, he will be equal in death with all other human beings. From A Little History of Poetry by John Carey.
